Cargolux: from fragmented data to self-service insights across the organization

SAP BW/4HANA

SAP Analytics Cloud

Cargolux is one of the world’s leading air freight / cargo-air companies, operating a global network of more than 70 destinations. The organisation handles large volumes of data across many departments: customers, shipments, maintenance, HR, commercial products, logistics, marketing etc. They want to improve visibility, decision-making, and make data actionable using intuitive tools and dashboards.

The challenge

  • Data existed in many source systems, but much information was not collected properly or not in a way that enabled cross-departmental, cross-functional insights.
  • There were issues with low visibility: departments lacked unified dashboards, many manual processes, fragmented reporting, no easy way for users to consume data in a self-service manner.
  • Cargolux wanted everyone (across all departments) to be able to make decisions based on facts—that meant building up a proper BI / data warehouse backbone plus tools for reporting/visualization.

Our solution

  • Cubis was selected as implementation partner to deliver a BI environment across departments.
  • Built a data warehouse (connecting to various source systems) to enable cross-departmental data integration; extract, combine, and cross-reference data.
  • Implemented reporting / visualization layer: dashboards, tables, listings, KPI graphics so that business users can get insights in user-friendly way.
  • Adopted “BI Self-Service” model: giving end users the ability to build dashboards themselves. Training was done via “train the trainer” model.
  • Tools used include SAP BW/4HANA for the warehouse backend, and SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) for dashboards / reporting.

The business value

  • Greater visibility across functions: departments can see real data, cross-functionally, which improves alignment and supports fact-based decision making.
  • Reduced manual work and errors: less reliance on ad-hoc, manual collections; users can see dashboards / reports rather than piecing together data themselves.
  • Faster and more relevant insights: priorities are identified via workshops; solution delivers quick wins, giving actionable information earlier in the process.
  • Empowerment of business users: self-service reporting lets users create what they need, when they need it.
  • Better governance of data (certified datasets), more consistency in reporting, single source of truth.
